Yes, you can automatically close the comments section of your older articles by simply checking the box beside that statement in your Discussion Settings. Go to BlogURL/wp-admin/options-discussion.php and go through the statements you can find there. Check those which you want to administer to your blog.
I looked for this one because I noticed that ever since I upgraded to WordPress 2.7, there has been a deluge of spam comments in most of my blogs. I have blocked most of the IPs already but it continues to come in. I don’t want to use other spam blocker aside from Akismet so I just made sure that all my posts older than 14 days will be closed for any comments or pingbacks.
